Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Morning Show host John Richards, is Lassoo
by The Duke Spirit from the 2008 album Neptune on Shangri-La Music.
Fans of UNKLE’s recent War Stories album may remember The Duke Spirit from the May Day
track, one that could just as easily have been their own. While more and more British exports these days turn to laptop electro, The Duke Spirit on the other hand is a powerhouse quintet that bleeds rock ‘n’ roll. Vengeful guitars, driving bass lines, and multiple percussionists support the dangerously seductive vocal prowess of Liela Moss, who swaggers on stage like Grace Slick channeled through Kathleen Turner.
Tomorrow night, March 7, you can witness the full passion and energy of The Duke Spirit as they headline John in the Morning at Night at Neumo’s. Joining them are fellow Brits The Voom Blooms and because we still value our collapsing currency we’ve booked a third band, the inimitable Boston band Tulsa. Fans of the Morning Show, and Song of the Day podcast subscribers, will realize immediately how strong this lineup really is, but if you’re still weighing the consequences of blowing off your other commitments to make to the show, give these two songs a listen:
The Voom Blooms – Nine Ships (MP3)
Tulsa – Breathe Thin (MP3)
